The Area

The town of WASSELONNE

His architectural heritage is constituted :

–       of relics of the fortified castle: ruins of a round tower, a square tower, newly rehabilitated fortifications (some relics    opened to the public Mondays and Wednesdays evenings during tourist season).
–        of a Silbermann organ, masterpiece of the Protestant church built in 1757.
–        of numerous half-timbered houses
–        of lintels of front-doors decorated or overcome by emblems of craftguild.

The town offers :
–        a complete equipment in services: shops, banks, schools, doctors, nurses, day-nursery, library,
–        a rich equipment of sports and free time: rooms for sports, stadium, covered swimming pool, tennis courts, fishing pond, fitness trail.
–        various restaurants
–        Throughout the year, entertainments and demonstrations succeeds one another: theatre plays, sporting events, dancing dinners, concerts, weekly market every Monday morning. A very particular accent is put on Christmas decoration and floodlighting in the town  during the end of the year.

Wasselonne is the starting point of walks in the Vosges forests (under 10 minutes almost) and of excursions hereabouts :

Wangenbourg-Engenthal : Fortified castle of the 13th century with vast surrounding wall and donjon of 24 m high. Panoramic View (free visit, tower opened in summer season)
Nideck : ruins of a fabled castle, waterfall of Nideck
Dabo : rock and chapel saint Leon (Alsatian pope), view spread on the west mountainside of the Vosges and Lorraine tray
The Shiplift in St-Louis Artzviller : allowing the boats to avoid 17 locks
Saverne : his castle of Rohan, his channel of the Marn in Rhine, castle of Haut-Barr
– Marmoutier : abbey of the 12th century, its potteries of art The Alsatian
Vineyard : The winegrowers open you their doors for a tasting of their wines and you will be able to discover in some cellars some splendid oak barrels made by coopers in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Obernai : the second touristic town of the department
– The Mount Sainte-Odile : : centre of pilgrimage devoted to Ste Odile, patroness of Alsace
– Rosheim and the splendid Romance church
– Molsheim, Metzig, its museum of the Carthusian monastery and its imposing church of the Jesuits
– The villages of Soufflenheim and Betschdorf, , in the north of Alsace, famous for their potteries
– Le Haut-Koenigsbourg : castle entirely rebuilt under the orders of the german emperor William II. You can also discover this Castle during a guided tour.
– and especially Strasbourg, European capitale, with its cathedral, its Christmas market, the typical quarter “la Petite France”, the European institutions…
